The Toughest Card to Play in Blackjack
When you play blackjack the last card you want to see in your hand or in the dealer's hand is the deuce. I know most people will say that having the dealer with an ace or a face card is a disaster, but at least then you know what you are up against. When the dealer holds a deuce you really have no idea of what to do. The same holds true when the deuce is in your own hand. Many times it gets you in all kinds of trouble.
The biggest problem with the 2 in blackjack is that it looks like a bust card. The problem is that it's not. Let's say the dealer has a 2 showing. What are you going to do when you have 12, 13, 14, 15, or 16? Most players will stand. Guess what? It is a long-term mistake. Let's look at the percentages. The dealer will draw to a nineteen 13% of the time, a twenty 12% of the time and a twenty-one 12% of the time. So if you stand with your 12 through 16 it means that 37% of the time you are going to get beat. If you include the dealer drawing to a 17 or 18 then standing when the dealer has a 2 when you have 12-16 is a long-term losing proposition.
What about that deuce in your own hand? Many times you will draw cards to improve upon your hand, but everyone fears getting the 10-2 and drawing a face card to bust. The reality for you, and for the dealer, is that the deuce with anything is a drawing hand. In the case of the dealer almost any hand has a good chance at improving. We just went over the percentages. The same holds true with the deuce in your own hand. I know that hitting that 10-2 is a tough thing to do, and when the dealer is extremely weak I would recommend not doing it. The problem becomes what happens when the dealer is in a marginal position? If he holds a 2 or a 3 then hitting that deuce is not a bad option.
Remember the next time you play blackjack that seeing a deuce in your hand or in the dealer's hand is going to require you to think. Blackjack is very often strictly a game of numbers that are easy to remember. The deuce is the one card that will cause you to think. Don't just blindly stand when you see it in the dealer's hand, and don't just blindly stand when it is in your own hand. If you can realize the deuce is a drawing card and will probably improve a hand you will be much better off. Hit those hands when the dealer is showing a deuce and you will be much better off in the long-term. I know it is not easy, but doing it many situations is the proper percentage play to make.
